When I began working with “The Type Center” in 1980, the advertising business was far from the computerized digitally generated world it has become. We specced galleys of type, produced negatives and film for print projects, and did color proofs for our clients in a much different and complex way. Fred and Joe were always there to help us meet our deadlines, and their service far surpassed their huge corporate competitors in the color sep business – and their prices were always so much lower. Their approach to the work always felt hand-crafted and their workmanship was always impeccable.

Then came the digital age. Million dollar color separation machines went on the scrap heap, and those not smart enough to evolve went out of business. Type Center grew into TCI Graphics, and a lot had to change for the company to survive, indeed thrive. One thing did not change. The extreme attention to craftsmanship. The one on one attitude they have with each and every customer. Ethics beyond reproach. Fred and Joe have retired, and Jim Meinsen carries on the legacy of one of the greatest resources to millennial designers, staying on the cutting edge of what they do.

I’ve used most of their competitors at some time or another, usually because a client has pushed me that direction because those other places had some their art files. I have successfully weaned all of them over to a far superior service bureau for trade show displays, large graphics, short print runs, and much more. There is no reason to use the big chain stores that offer these services when TCI is available to agencies like myself. And in these days where quality, competitive pricing and a personal touch matters, there’s really no comparison in the Queen City.
